Construction works are about to begin on Sub-frontage 1: Long Curtain Moat of the Southsea Coastal Scheme from 19 October 2020 until May 2022, informs the Queen’s Harbour Master Portsmouth.

Shoreham Port

The contractor for the works is VolkerStevin Boskalis Westminster (VSBW).

In summary, works will include the construction of a compound area, demolition of the existing defences, installation of a temporary shingle working platform, installation of sheet piling, placement of precast concrete units and placement of a rock revetment.

Starting from Friday 30th October 2020, the contractor will use hopper dredger “SOSPAN DAU” (LOA 72.8m) to install the temporary working platform.

As reported, the dredger will use a spud pole during discharging of gravel to stay in position. During these operations the vessel will remain outside the main navigation channel.

The Southsea Coastal Scheme got underway on 7 September 2020 with the construction of coastal defences between Long Curtain Moat and Clarence Pier.

The first of six phases in the Portsmouth City Council-led project came after some 10 years of planning and public consultation.

The entire scheme is the UK’s largest coastal defences project, worth more than £100 million.
