The Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) recently partnered with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, to conduct a field-based Engineering With Nature Workshop to demonstrate the application of native plant species to support engineering objectives.

The workshop demonstrated how best to maximize environmental benefits of nature-based features to enhance the structural integrity of dykes in placement areas within Galveston Bay, Matagorda Bay, Corpus Christi Bay and surrounding ecosystems and provided instructions to an interagency group concerning EWN principles, USACE said.

This is the first of the series of EWN field-based workshop facilitated by ERDC to train USACE engineers, scientist and project managers about new techniques to manage dredge material placement areas using native vegetation.

“Participants gained field experience in new planting techniques and identified potential applications of EWN principles with ongoing and new projects within the USACE Southwest Division,” USACE said in its announcement.
