The Pointe Mouillee Confined Disposal Facility, located in Berlin Charter Township, Michigan, is currently in the beginning stages of creating an intermediate cell to facilitate future disposal operations, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit district, just announced.

This facility was originally constructed with a coarse aggregate embankment and rip-rap wave protection.

The primary purpose of the Pointe Mouillee Confined Disposal Facility is to contain 18 million cubic yards of contaminated dredged material from the existing navigation channels in the Detroit and Rouge Rivers.

The navigation channels, which carry a large volume of waterborne cargo, require periodic dredging to maintain the depths necessary for ship traffic, USACE said.

Besides functioning to confine contaminated dredged material, the Pointe Mouillee facility also provides a protective barrier to help prevent further destruction of the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area and marsh.
