Dredging works for Willoughby Spit and Vicinity Coastal Storm Damage Reduction Project in the City of Norfolk, Virginia, officially started last week, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District.

Dredging and beach building activities are currently underway at Ocean View Beach, USACE said in its latest project update.

Construction works include placing 1.2 million cubic yards of sand along the shoreline, widening the beach to 60 feet and creating a slope to 5 feet above mean low water.

USACE expects that the dredging and beach building operations will be completed by late May.

This coastal scheme, worth $34.5 million, is the largest single storm damage reduction project in the City of Norfolk.
