VolkerStevin Secures Port of Workington Contract

Business & Finance

VolkerStevin has been appointed by Cumbria County Council to reconstruct the Port of Workington’s riverside wall, which will replace the existing failing structure.

The project involves replacing 170m of anchored sheet steel pile quay wall and capping beam, stabilizing the existing failing quay and leaving a corner of the port as suitable habitat to encourage wildlife.

David Southward, County Councillor for Egremont and Cabinet Member for Economic Development & Property, said: “Cumbria County Council is committed to the long term sustainability of the Port of Workington and is pleased to confirm that these essential safety works will soon begin in partnership with VolkerStevin. The reconstruction of the riverside wall forms part of a significant investment program for the port over the next 15 years, which was agreed by the county council in 2014.”

Rob Coupe, managing director at VolkerStevin, said: “This is a fantastic project to be awarded where we can contribute to the development and protection of the Port and adjacent River Derwent as well as creating habitat areas on site.”

The project duration will last 17 weeks with minimal impact to local community as the works are fully contained within the existing port boundaries.
