Boskalis’ Water Injection Dredger Terra Plana Launched

Business & Finance

Boskalis’ new water injection dredger Terra Plana was successfully launched at TBG Harlingen – Thecla Bodewes Group shipyard last month.

Two companies signed the contract for the construction of the Terra Plana on June 3, 2015 and the actual work on the dredger began in September 2015.

Water injection dredgers are often used in small, shallow ports and marinas because they have good manoeuvrability and can dredge very close to embankments and quay walls.

An injection beam located underneath the vessel injects large volumes of water under low pressure into silt or fine sand in order to resuspend it.

The sediment mixture turns into a density current, which is then removed with the help of gravity.

Main characteristics of the Terra Plana:

  • Length overall – 39,8 m;
  • Length b.p.p. – 35,93 m;
  • Breadth – 12 m;
  • Moulded depth – 4,1 m;
  • Design draught – 3,0 m;
  • Max. dredging depth – 30 m;
  • Min. dredging depth – 3 m;
  • Total installed power – 3.423 kW;
  • Jet pump output – 12.000 m³/hr;
  • Navigation speed – 11 knots;
  • Dynamic positioning system – Navis;
  • Main engines – 2×746 kW (Caterpillar).
