Coomera Dredged Sediment Management Facility Project Begins

Business & Finance

GCWA’s (Gold Coast Waterways Authority) Coomera Dredged Sediment Management Facility project has begun with the community and industry consultation currently underway.

For many years, GCWA, City of Gold Coast Council (CoGC), local industry and private riverfront/canal estates on the Coomera River have been searching for a cost effective and environmentally sound solution for disposal of sediment that must be dredged from the upper reaches of the Coomera River and adjacent waterways.

The proposed facility at 91 Shipper Drive is a longterm, cost-effective solution that will minimize potential environmental impacts from managing dredged sediment that is not suitable for riverbank or beach replenishment.

“The facility will be available for use by organisations that undertake dredging in the area including the GCWA, City of Gold Coast Council, local industry and private residential estates (Hope Island, Sanctuary Cove),” Mr Morris said.

Pending approval, it is anticipated that construction of the facility will commence in mid 2016 with its first use in 2017. The facility is just one of the projects that the GCWA is investing $35.3 million in over four years to Sustain, Enhance and Promote local waterways.

GCWA has contracted Kellogg Brown and Root Pty Ltd (KBR) to carry out the site investigation, concept and detailed designs, approvals, construction oversight and stakeholder management of the project.
