Bomb experts were called to the former Swan Hunter shipyard yesterday, after the possible munition was found during the River Tyne dredging project and brought to shore.

Today, police carried out a controlled detonation of the munition at Longsands beach in Tynemouth, the News Post Leader informs.

A 200 meter cordon was put in place while extra officers were in the area speaking with people and offering reassurance,” the Northumbria Police said today.

The former shipyard in Wallsend was cleared after police were alerted at 11.30am to the discovery of what is thought to be unexploded munition from the Second World War.

Part of the Swan Hunter site was evacuated on Tuesday after the bomb was found.
