Roen Salvage to Dredge Duluth-Superior Harbor

Business & Finance

Roen Salvage Company of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., has been awarded a $1.8 million contract for the dredging of Duluth/Superior Harbor.

The contract was awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, and includes removing of approximately 150,000 cubic yards of material from the harbor.

Each year approximately 110,000 cubic yards of material are dredged from Duluth-Superior Harbor. This is the minimum amount of dredging required to keep the harbor open for shipping.

The beginning of the project has been set for July with dredging expected to be complete in November 2015.

With 35 million tons of cargo shipped and received each year, Duluth-Superior Harbor is the largest port on the Great Lakes. When Duluth is kept dredged and fully operational, freighters are able to leave the harbor fully loaded, maximizing the amount of iron ore carried by each freighter, and subsequently improving the competitiveness of the domestic steel industry.
