Nautical Depth Study Starts at Kochi Port

Business & Finance

As part of efforts to reduce the costs of maintenance dredging, an 18-month study on siltation of shipping channels for implementation of the nautical depth concept at Kochi Port has officially started.

The Hindu reports that a senior Port Trust official said the study is being funded by the Union Government through grants.

It is for the first time that an Indian major port is going ahead with a nautical depth dredging, a concept which is in use in most of the European river ports.

The study could result in reducing maintenance dredging cost by about 30 per cent, which would be a big achievement and beneficial in the long run.
