Scotland’s Newest Dock Launched at Westway

Business & Finance

Scottish Government Minister for Transport and Islands, Derek Mackay MSP, has announced the launch of a brand new dock facility at Westway in Renfrew.

The new £1.3m development was one of the first locations in the country to receive funding from the Scotland’s National Renewable Infrastructure Fund (N-RIF), managed by Scottish Enterprise.

Mr Mackay said: “I have followed the development of Westway Park closely over the years as local MSP and I am delighted to be returning as Minister for Transport and Islands to mark the opening of this impressive and innovative dock facility.

It will provide a unique transport solution to support renewable and heavy engineering companies, opening up the riverside for potential use right up the River Clyde and into the River Cart. Westway is already home to a number of significant companies and this dedicated dock facility will make it even more attractive to businesses,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of park owner, Moorfield Group, Mark Holmes, fund manager said: “The completion of this strategic facility is the culmination of five years hard work and a huge team effort between all partners.

The project has already accelerated the overall Westway development plan for a further 30 acres of land and we are working closely with Renfrewshire Council to develop a masterplan that could see up to up to £250m invested in the area over the next decade as part of the City Deal and create further business infrastructure including a bridge over the River Cart,” Holmes added.

David Leven, director of energy at Scottish Enterprise added: “The completion of work at Westway gives us a modern site, capable of meeting the needs of manufacturing companies operating in the energy and low carbon sectors – and will be a real asset to the West of Scotland.

Westway is rapidly becoming one of the top industrial assets in Scotland – last year more than 350,000 sqft of industrial deals were concluded, with the park welcoming a range of new occupiers including Surface Technology, Renewable Parts and recently Malin Marine.

Companies are also being offered the opportunity to create their own bespoke properties, as part of the pre-let arrangements on a 30-acre site to the south side of the park.

The growth of Westway maximizes the opportunity to create a gateway employment site, which meets the needs of existing and new businesses, creates new jobs and reinforces the park’s strategic location, adjacent to Glasgow airport.

The redevelopment contract was managed by GRAHAM Construction and involved dredging of the dock area, along with work to create a navigable channel along the River Cart and the installation of a new quay wall.
