Phase Two of the Tendring Scheme

Preliminary works for the start of the second phase of a major £36 million coast protection scheme in Tendring will begin next week. 

VBA Joint Venture Limited will be moving onto site on Monday as they prepare to start demolishing the existing concrete groynes and the end of the Victoria Road outfall.

The contractors aim to take advantage of very low tides which are being predicted later in the week. Two excavators will be delivered on Monday, a dump truck on Tuesday and a third excavator later in the week.

It is expected that there will be some noise from the demolition works which are due to get under way on Tuesday and the level of noise will be carefully monitored.

Tendring District Council (TDC) Leader Mick Page said that he is excited that the scheme is progressing so well.

“This is good news for everyone and the sooner the whole project is completed the sooner people will be able to enjoy the 5kms of recharged beaches,” he said.

“Those living in that area will also be reassured that the section of coastline will be protected for the future.”

The first section of the work between Holland Haven to Fernwood Avenue was recently completed and the beaches opened back up to the public.

The second phase will involve a further 15 fishtail groynes being built and the beaches between them being recharged.

The works will take place 24/7 due to the scheme being tide dependent and it is subject to weather and sea conditions.

The promenade and beaches from Fernwood Avenue to Clacton Pier will need to be closed for safety reasons from around the end of February right through until the completion towards the end of the year.
