Maidens Harbour Dredging Announced

Business & Finance

The dredging operations designed to increase draft at the Maidens Harbour and planned for early 2015, have been just announced by the Maidens Harbour Trust.

Due to siltation from the beach, the Harbour Trust revealed its plan to dredge the entrance Channel to Maidens Harbour. This would be for a distance of 100 meters south along the existing entrance Channel from the entrance markers. The amount of sand and silt to be removed would be less than 1000 cubic meters.

Material from the dredging will be placed on the beach just below the high water mark to the west of the burn thereby not interfering with the designated bathing water area.

A full analysis of the material will be undertaken by an independent laboratory and consents are being sought from: Crown Estates; Marine Scotland; South Ayrshire Council. Consultations will also take place with Scottish Natural Heritage.

The work could take place sometime between February and May.
