New Coastal Scheme for Netley

Business & Finance

An innovative partnership between local residents, a developer and Eastleigh Borough Council has resulted in a new coastal defense scheme at The Towers in Netley.

Residents of The Towers approached the Council about trying to improve the coastal defenses along this stretch of foreshore that is subject to coastal erosion but was not designated for protection. During the storms of the past winter, unprotected sections of coast have suffered considerable damage.

Council Leader Keith House said: “This project was a great example of a Council acting to help to solve a problem residents could not sort out by themselves. Private individuals with the help of the constructors, parish and local council have combined to create something substantial, for the benefit of those individuals and the local community.”

Plans were already being progressed by developers of Netley Court School to protect a section of coastline leaving a vulnerable gap on this area of foreshore.

The Council offered a grant of £13,000 to residents towards the costs of the defenses, that reflected the wider community interest in protecting the shoreline. In addition, residents were offered a repayable grant of £50,000 towards the costs of the scheme.
