New Scheme to Protect Littlehampton

Business & Finance

Multicat Avon and deck barge JML36 are currently on charter to VolkerStevin who are delivering a £14.5m scheme to improve the tidal flood defenses along the East Bank of the River Arun in Littlehampton on behalf of the environment agency.

The scheme includes flood defenses from the lighthouse on the Promenade, to north of the A259.

The ambitious scheme includes construction of a new tidal river wall to protect over 2,000 residential properties and businesses against 100 years of predicted sea level rise. It will also improve the walkway along the riverside, creating an attractive pedestrian route between the town and the beach.

Collaboration and cooperation is a key feature of the scheme which is being delivered in partnership with the Environment Agency, Arun District Council, West Sussex County Council and Littlehampton Harbor Board. All of whom have worked together to ensure plans will deliver maximum benefit to the local community both in terms of flood defence and environmental improvements,” a spokesperson for VolkerStevin said.

The project is expected to be completed by March 2015, and Avon is likely to remain on site at Littlehampton for the majority of this time.
