Lawmakers Urge Full Cleanup of Kalamazoo Superfund Site

Senators Carl Levin, Debbie Stabenow and Congressman Fred Upton yesterday wrote to Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy, encouraging the agency to follow the wishes of local officials and citizens on cleanup of the Allied Paper Superfund Site in Kalamazoo.

The lawmakers note that the City of Kalamazoo supports the total removal of an estimated 1.5 million cubic yards of PCB-contaminated waste from a landfill on the site “and is concerned about restrictions that would prevent them from developing the site” if EPA chooses to merely cap and contain the contamination. EPA has announced that a final cleanup option for the site will be proposed this year.

The lawmakers also write that it is essential that EPA tests the site to ensure that contamination does not migrate into nearby water sources.
