Assemblyman Says No to Proposed LNG Port Off Rockaway

Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder (D-Rockaway) together with dozens of his colleagues sent a letter urging Governor Cuomo to strongly oppose the “Port Ambrose” project, a proposed deep-water port facility for liquefied natural gas, based roughly 19 miles off the New York shore.

“We have worked too hard on our Sandy recovery only to see our community put at risk with this new project,” said Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder. “There are still too many questions that must be answered before bringing liquefied natural gas to our communities and potentially harming our families.”

In their letter, they urged the Governor to veto the project stating it would further aggravate environmental degradation by increasing New York’s reliance on a methane emitting fuel.

The construction and operation of Port Ambrose would have a strong negative ecological impact on its surroundings, discharge millions of gallons of chemically treated seawater, and require the dredging of miles of sea floor, said Goldfeder.
