Damen Dredging

Last Saturday the cutter suction dredger “Susanna II” was baptized and handed over to its owner, dredging contractor Verboon Maasland.

All members of the Verboon team were present with their families to celebrate the completion of the vessel. After the required speeches and the bottle of champagne against the hull, the Verboon employees made use of the opportunity to inspect the dredger: a renewed acquaintance.

The “Susanna II” is the second stationary dredger for the company Verboon Maasland. The first one, named “Susanna” has also been built by Damen Dredging – yet this was some 32 years ago. The new dismountable dredger is a copy of the first one – however with 21st century outfitting. The small cutter suction dredgers are provided with a Ø250 mm discharge pipeline and are fitted out with a swing ladder for dredging at max -6m.

The divisible swing ladder has a total length of 18 m, which results in the impressive swing width of 28 m. Moreover the “Susanna II” is equipped with a spud carriage installation of a 2 m stroke and spuds which can work both on land and afloat. All these elements result in a highly efficient dredger.

The new stationary dredger has been baptized by Christine Verboon, the youngest lady of the 3rd generation of the Verboon family. Also the new dredger was named after grandmother Susanna, the wife of the founder of the family-owned company. After the ceremony, enthusiastic members of the Verboon team and their family members seized the opportunity to admire the dredger.

The main pontoon contains the engine room with a 254 kW Caterpillar diesel engine, type C12TA, powering the Damen dredge pump, type BP2525MD. The generator set and the hydraulic unit can be found here, too.

The ergonomically designed control cabin has excellent view on the fore deck and swing ladder. The control cabin is dividable – keeping the maximum height of the full dredger under 1.5 m for swift bridge passages. This requirement is imperative due to many small scale dredging jobs to carry out with plenty of low bridges to pass. Therefore, also the spuds can be tilted. For transport reasons, the modularly designed dredger comes apart in a main pontoon, 4 side pontoons, the control cabin, the spuds and the divided cutter ladder, which all are transportable by road.

After the party “Susanna II” has started on her first job : cleaning the Westfriesche Vaart near Medemblik, the Netherlands, together with her sister vessel. The delivery of the “Susanna II” has reconfirmed the good cooperation between Verboon Maasland and Damen Dredging Equipment.
