Rostock Port: Ups and Downs at River Warnow (Germany)

22.7 million tonnes of goods (gross) were handled via the various port facilities in Rostock last year; 1.3 million tonnes or five percent less than in 2011.

The lion’s share of 21.2 million tonnes of freight was loaded and unloaded at Rostock overseas port. According to the port and shipping authority another 1.5 million tonnes were moved at the cargo and fishing port, the chemical port and other port facilities in Rostock.

‘Despite the rather unsatisfactory cargo handling trend in 2012 our company has invested sustainably in the internal development of the port. From planning to implementation the upgrading of infrastructure is a very long-term business geared towards the strategic orientation of the location which allows only limited consideration of cyclical trends‘, says Ulrich Bauermeister.

The port development company invested Euro 39 million in the infrastructure of the seaport in 2012. Euro 4.8 million alone were used for completing the northern extension of pier III. The embankment was already built in 2010 and the land filling with 1.68 million cubic metres of gravel from the Baltic Sea was completed in the spring of 2011. Construction work was finished until the spring of 2012 and the new berth 15 on the eastern side of pier III was also completed at the same time.

Thus the entire third stage of the maritime business park was brought to completion as well. Since 2008 a total of nearly Euro 64 million were invested for this purpose.

Further large building projects in 2012 were the reconditioning of berth 5 in the oil port for a total of Euro 2.6 million, the new building of the eastern access road to the port for Euro 1.7 million as well as the completion of the main conversion work at the ferry terminal and at berth 54 for Euro nine million.

In 2012 it became possible to collect and treat waste water from ships at the three berths in Warnemünde in cooperation with the company Eurawasser. For this, Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock invested Euro 2.3 million at the passenger quay. A quarter of the cruise liners disposed of around 20,000 cubic meters of sewage through the new facilities last year.

The extension of the handling facility for intermodal transport began in the spring of 2012. Apart from three additional railway tracks with the necessary facilities and the southern craneway girder the entire southern handling areas were newly built. For this alone a total of Euro ten million was invested until the end of 2012. The construction of the northern craneway girder and the production and assembly of two new gantry cranes will be done this year.

The port development company plans on a total capex volume of approx. Euro 30 million this year. The largest building sites are the works at the handling facility of the intermodal transport terminal, at ferry stage 65 as well as the conversion of the administrative building of the port development company. Furthermore the annual plan includes various upgrades of traffic areas and areas for settlement and the laying of supply and disposal lines such as the new building of a logistics area east of port basin C, the complete reconditioning of the western part of Ost-West-Strasse, the replacement of the access bridge to the eastern part of the port and the creation of a new connection to berth 25 west of the existing coal storage area.
