Harbor Authority Seeks Money for Kalamazoo River Dredging (USA)

The Saugatuck-Douglas Harbor Authority is preparing plans to fight the low water levels along Lake Michigan, reports wzzm13.com.

To realize this plan, the Harbor Authority is asking the Saugatuck and Douglas cities to approve money for the dredging program on the Kalamazoo River harbors.

Robert Sapita, chairman of the Harbor Authority, said: “We realize we’ll have to fund this somewhat on our own.”

Regarding this issue, Chris Scropp, chief of construction for the Army Corps of Engineers in Grand Haven, stated: “Every harbor is a foot lower than they normally would be and the smaller harbors are even worse off because they haven’t been dredged.”

If the plan gets the green light on Tuesday’s meeting, the dredging project could commence in July 2013.
