At the southern shore of the IJsselmeer in Workum, Friesland, Van Oord is making steady progress on a project that combines coastal protection, navigational safety, recreation, and nature restoration.
A key milestone has recently been reached with the completion of the breakwater supporting the navigation channel to the harbor of Workum. Once the final rock armour is placed, the structure will be ready for handover, helping to keep the channel accessible and improve safety for shipping.
For recreational purpose a concrete path, fishing spots and a boat ramp have also been constructed on the breakwater.
"At the same time, we have started deepening the recreational waters at It Soal. The material dredged from the area is being put to beneficial use: the sand is transported to the Workumer Buitenwaard, an important habitat for a wide variety of bird species, where it is being used to restore erosion-affected areas," Van Oord said.
Restoring the erosion affected areas will further strengthen this valuable Natura 2000 area through the creation of new sand banks, shellfish habitats and additional stone structures designed to reduce erosion and safeguard the coastline for the future.
