Mid West Ports Authority said that the progress on the Surge Protection Breakwater is continuing, with local suppliers playing an important role in the project.
Around 340,000 tons of high-grade granite is currently stockpiled at Kimberley Quarries in Chapman Valley, ready for use in the Port Maximization Project.
Over the life of the project, 1.3 million tons of rock will be supplied. The granite is blasted, screened and sized on site, with some rocks weighing up to eight tons. These larger rocks will form the protective armor layer of the breakwater, helping protect Geraldton Port from ocean surge and swell.
Large, flat-surfaced rocks are also being selected to provide additional haul-out areas for Australian Sea Lions, incorporating consideration of the local marine environment into the breakwater design.
According to Mid West Ports Authority, sourcing this material locally is supporting Mid West businesses while delivering an important piece of infrastructure for the future of Geraldton Port.
