Construction work is well underway on the Grand Isle shoreline breakwaters.
"Our federal partners at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) have begun placing rocks for the first of 31 new breakwaters that will help close a critical gap in the existing shoreline protection around Grand Isle," said Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA).
Each breakwater will be approximately 250 feet long and 250 feet apart. This spacing will allow offshore sediment to flow through the system and help nourish Grand Isle Beach.
Together, the new breakwaters will create a continuous system of protection along the island's Gulf shoreline, helping reduce the wave erosion and provide protection from storm surge, CPRA added.
Construction is expected to be completed in July 2027.
