After six months of preparation, the moment has arrived: the IJsselmeerdijk Consortium (Boskalis Nederland and Van Oord) has placed the first sand for the reinforcement of the IJsselmeerdijk, on behalf of Waterschap Zuiderzeeland.
"For this first step, we are deploying a spray pontoon and excavator," Van Oord said.
"From the water, the pontoon sprays sand onto the designated location. Step by step, this creates the foundation for the future foreshore and the ecological zone behind it. In the coming period, we will continue placing more sand, gradually shaping the foreshore."
The companies will then install fascine mattresses and rock armor to provide a robust protective covering.
This project is part of the joint task of the water boards and the national government to make the Netherlands flood-proof by 2050.
