Port of Vancouver said that the dredging works to improve marine shipping efficiency in Burrard Inlet are starting this week in and around the Second Narrows waterway.
"Dredging activities will take place just east of the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge up to February 2027. The section of the navigation channel where works are occurring will remain clear and accessible to commercial and recreational marine traffic throughout construction," the Port said.
The works include three components:
- dredging along the edges of the navigation channel over an area of less than two hectares, east of the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge in Burrard Inlet's Second Narrows,
- removal of segments of Metro Vancouver-owned and decommissioned water mains overlapping with the dredging areas,
- installation of new navigation aids near the Columbia Containers transloading facility along Burrard Inlet's south shore, west of the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge.
The project involves localized excavation (in the water and on land); pile cutting, driving, and drilling for the navigation aids installation; transport of dredged material by barge to a transloading ramp and by truck to an approved, land-based disposal facility; and boulder recovery and relocation for marine habitat enhancement.
