DEME announces important milestone at Fehmarnbelt tunnel

Business development

DEME Group today announced an important milestone at the Fehmarnbelt tunnel project – the first two massive 73,500-ton tunnel elements for the project have successfully been floated up from the skidding beams in Upper Basin A and carefully transferred to Lower Basin A.

This achievement was the result of weeks of meticulous planning and close collaboration across multiple teams.

Each element, measuring 217 meters in length, was carefully floated using high-capacity pumps to raise the water level to +10.4 meters above sea level.

As the transfer progressed, water levels were carefully managed, and the water was gradually lowered back to sea level to securely position the elements in Lower Basin A.

In total, approximately 975,000 m³ (975 million liters) of water was pumped in this highly precise operation.

The next phase of the process will involve floating the elements out of Basin A and transferring them to the ballast concrete jetty in the Work Harbor.
