The port is located in an estuary that receives a significant volume of sediment, which can cause silting and reduce the established depth of the waterway. Therefore, dredging in Santos is permanently necessary to maintain the depth of the complex.

The dredging is being carried out by Van Oord’s trailing suction hopper dredger Utrecht. This includes removing sediment along the channel bottom to maintain a depth of 15 meters.

The area of operation covers the sections of the navigation channel from Barra to Alemoa, with the removed sediments to be deposited at the offshore disposal site.

According to APA, the dredging operations will continue until January 2025.
