Sutherland Shire Council (NSW) has developed the draft Woronora River Dredging Management Plan to guide future dredging work carried out in the river.

The plan sets out a proactive, long-term approach to ensuring safe and reliable access throughout the Woronora River for residents, waterway users and emergency services.

Woronora River Dredging Management Plan recommends that, to maintain navigability over the next 30 years, dredging is required of a list of key problem areas.

Around 5,750m3 of sediment would need to be removed every five to ten years. The preferred dredging strategy involves the use of a barge mounted excavator and transport and disposal of dredge spoil either offshore or on land.

The high level cost estimate for this is in the order of $1.6 million at each instance of dredging, and an initiation of dredging framework has been prepared to provide a clear trigger to initiate dredging under this Plan.
