The section of creek is popular with locals and visitors and while the bank had been steadily eroding over a long period of time, the situation worsened in recent months.

The washout had taken out a section of the gravel footpath and a light.

Last week, contractors filled the washout with sand and compacted it, mindful of not damaging nearby tree roots, said the Council.

There are a lot of considerations when working on a project like this because of the sensitive marine environment,” Malcolm Robertson, Acting Director Infrastructure Services, said.

It’s not just a case of filling in the eroded section, we need to make it as strong as possible otherwise the damage will most likely reoccur,” he added.

Once the eroded area was filled and compacted, it was top-dressed and stabilized using natural coir mesh.
