According to the Local Notice to Mariners, trenching utilizes a dredging vessel to remove rock and sand, known as spoil, from the Barossa pipeline trench for disposal at the dedicated spoil disposal ground located north-east of Darwin Harbor, adjacent to pre-existing spoil ground used for the INPEX Ichthys project.

The trenching operations will be executed within the Darwin Port Limits, between the DLNG facility in the south, and the Darwin Port Limits in the north.

The backhoe dredger Machiavelli will excavate spoil which will be loaded the split hopper barges.

The split barge when full will be towed through the navigation channel to the spoil ground, where it will dispose the spoil material.

Also, the tug will return the empty barge back to the dredge site for the next cycle.

The start of operations is expected to take place in mid-September 2024.
