According to the Northern Territory Government, dredging is required to deepen the harbor for vessels to safely manoeuvre around and access the ship lift and wet berths as part of the new facility.

The cutter suction dredge Arnhem will excavate material from the seabed and relocate to onshore dredge spoil ponds and re-use as fill material for land reclamation at East Arm.

Dredging will be undertaken in accordance with the project’s environmental management plan and NT Environment Protection Authority requirements.

Environmental monitoring and water sampling will be in place to measure water quality levels before, during and after dredging activity in the ship lift marine construction works area.
