According to the Minister Maciu Nalumisa, the government has engaged Hall Contracting to undertake dredging operations in the Ba River as part of their initiative to improve the management of the flood risks and events through flood mitigation works for all major river systems in Fiji.

This project involves dredging a 3.6-kilometer stretch from the Ba River mouth to the open sea and removing around 300,000 cubic meters of silt.

These efforts will significantly improve the river’s capacity to discharge excess water, helping to protect Ba Town and surrounding communities from future floods.

The Ba Watershed is located in the north west of Viti Levu with more than 49,000 people residing in the area. The Ba Delta consists of silt, sand and gravel with rapid build-up from erosion in the middle and upper reaches of the Ba River, which subjects it to both river and coastal flooding.
