Bringing Montgomery Canal back to its former glory

Dredging

On the Montgomery Canal in Wales, with support from the Levelling Up Fund, the Canal and River Trust is carrying out a series of works to bring the canal back to its former glory.

The project includes:

  • Dredging to remove silt and dominant reed species,
  • Repairing banks and creating softer edges for wildlife,
  • Creating nature reserves to enhance the biodiversity around the canal corridor, etc.

These works will also help make the canal easier to use for unpowered activities such as canoeing and paddleboarding.

The restoration is also creating a broad and sustainable habitat to support a range of wildlife and the protected floating water plantain that are found on the canal.
