In its latest edition of the Terra et Aqua magazine, International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC) explored in detail the topic of Dune Erosion.

The article presented a comparison of field observations and model results of the response of the Maasvlakte 2 curved sandy sea defence to storm attack.

At a curved coastline, dune erosion is greater than at a straight coastline. However, how much higher is often difficult to predict.

Following the winter storms of 2022, measurements of dune erosion at Maasvlakte 2 offered a unique opportunity to analyse erosion patterns along this curved coastline.

Moreover, it allowed for the validation of dune erosion predictions with a 2D XBeach model, and an investigation into the importance of using a two-dimensional modelling approach to predict dune erosion.
