The first barge arrived from Scotland to start the second stage of the scheme, which will put sea defences in place on the west side of the pier – a 300m “armour revetment” consisting of 38,000 tonnes of rock.

A similar project is being carried out at Mundesley, and together they aim to protect 600 homes and businesses from flooding and coastal erosion.

At Cromer, the project will also include repairs to groynes, navigation beacons, concreting work and access improvement work.

The work, which is being carried out by Balfour Beatty, is scheduled to be completed by July 2025.
