According to DEME, this marks a special milestone in this incredible project – the largest construction site in Northern Europe.

The element, scheduled to be immersed later this year, will form the first 217 metres of the tunnel between Denmark and Germany. The tunnel will be comprised of 79 large elements and 10 special concrete pieces, currently being constructed in the tunnel factory in Rødbyhavn.

The King also met some of the talented young apprentices gaining valuable experience building the world’s longest immersed tunnel,” said DEME.

To commemorate this historic day, a time capsule has been created, filled with thoughts and items from people involved in designing and constructing this first element.

The capsule will be sealed and displayed at the Fehmarnbelt project’s Exhibition Centre before being buried near the tunnel portal for future generations to discover.
