Now that dredging has been completed ahead of the Christmas holidays, the port basin channel is cleared, allowing boaties access to and from the Wharf Street boat ramp within two hours either side of high tide.

With the The Stage One works wrapped up before the New Year, the contractor – Concrete Structures NZ Ltd can now focus on the next phase of the project, rebuilding of the Wharf Two.

Whanganui Port infrastructure project

Whanganui Port is a vital link in New Zealand’s supply chain, providing berthing facilities for coastal freight vessels and commercial boats. The historic wharves that comprise the Port, are neglected and urgently need restoration. Without this work, the existing port operations would be limited to Wharf 1 as is currently the case.

Whanganui Port’s infrastructure project under Te Pūwaha includes:

  • Upgrading 450m of wharves;
  • Development of marine infrastructure;
  • Provision of a hardstand and runway suitable for Q-West’s mobile boat hoist with a 380-tonne lift capacity to enable boats to be lifted in and out of the water;
  • Improving dredging capabilities to secure the long term safe use of the wharves and public slipway.
