Western Marine to dredge South Harbor in Petersburg, AK

Operations & Maintenance

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska District recently awarded a $2.75 million contract for the Petersburg South Harbor Navigation Improvements project to Western Marine Construction.

USACE

This is the second contract awarded by the district with funds from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).

According to the Corps, the work will deepen the harbor to -19.25 feet and establish a new federal project at the middle harbor location.

Currently, insufficient depths and existing marine infrastructure within the Petersburg Harbor system cause transportation inefficiencies and limit access for commercial fishing and subsistence activities.

This creates a strain on the economy for the region and nation. The navigation improvements renew USACE commitment to the area and the community’s harbor maintenance needs, concluded the Corps.
