Hopper dredger Sospan Dau was busy over the past two weeks discharging 18,000m3 of dredged material onto the foreshore in Southsea.

According to the officials, the dredger has formed a working platform with this material in preparation for sheet piling on the west side.

This will allow the contractors to commence sheet piling the rear pile line next week from the Saluting Platform towards Spur Redoubt.

Sheet piling between Spur Redoubt and Clarence Pier was completed before Christmas, allowing the crews to demolish the existing promenade parapet between these two areas.

Stretching for 4.5km from Old Portsmouth to Eastney, the Southsea Coastal Scheme is the UK’s largest coastal defences project, worth more than £100 million.

VSBW, a VolkerStevin and Boskalis Westminster Ltd. joint venture, is the main contractor working to deliver the new sea defences.
