MPDC said in the release that following the dredging of the Maputo Port access channel in 2016/2017 (from -11 meters to -14.3 meters) this will be the first maintenance dredging of the access channels.

They also stated that the dredging will focus on the Matola, Katembe, Polana, Xefina and Northern Channels removing approx. 1.4 million cubic meters of accumulated silt, mud and sand. The drafts of the quays of the Maputo and Matola terminals will also be maintained.

Maintenance dredging is expected to start as early as October and last for a total of four months.

Alongside this, there are also rehabilitation works on quays 6, 7, 8 and 9, which are expected to end in the second quarter of 2020.

As with the deepening two years ago, there will be permanent coordination between the dredger and the crew involved and the port operations to ensure that the channel is open and safe for traffic.
