Paul Tschirky, a Senior Principal Coastal Engineer based in Louisiana, will present paper “ Living Breakwaters: Designing for Resiliency ” at the 36th International Conference on Coastal Engineering (ICCE) 2018 in Baltimore, Maryland July 30-August 3, 2018.

With more than 20 years of experience in coastal resiliency, restoration, and water management, Paul Tschirky (Ph.D., P.Eng, D.CE) presentation will discuss the Living Breakwaters Project, a unique design of an offshore breakwater system to promote coastal resilience in Tottenville, Staten Island, New York.

The presentation explores the modeling and design of these unique coastal engineering and ecological structures. It combines physical risk reduction through wave attenuation and erosion prevention functions with ecological enhancement and habitat creation as an integrated part of the design.

The ICCE event is the premier coastal engineering conference held biennially under the auspices of the Coastal Engineering Research Council of COPRI.

The Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute (COPRI) is a semi-autonomous institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the country’s oldest national engineering society.
