Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) officially kicked off the land reclamation operations in Shaviyani Atoll Komandoo last week, local media reports.

Under this major development program, MTCC’s trailing suction hopper dredger ‘Mahaa Jarraafu’ will reclaim about ten hectares of new land within a period of approximately seven days.

Commenting the project’s progress, the Vice President of the Komandoo Council, Mohamed Arif, stated that the speed of the land reclamation works is satisfactory.

Komandoo consists of seven hectares of land which would be increased to fourteen once reclamation is done.

The Vice President also added that – when the project is completed – the island’s powerhouse and the waste management center would be moved to the new land along with some leases for businesses.
