Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co. (GLDD), from Oak Brook, Illinois, has won a $19.3 million contract for flood control and coastal emergency repair to the Delaware coast.

Bids were solicited via the Internet with three received, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) said in their latest announcement.

Work will be performed in Bethany Beach, Delaware, with an estimated completion date of April 15, 2019. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District, is the contracting activity.

Beach replenishment is a process of pumping sand up from the ocean floor and back onto the beaches, building up dunes to protect from when storms hit the coastline.

The dunes and widened beach serve as a barrier between the coastal towns and tourism industry from the powerful waves that surge in passing storms.
