Town of Duck Project Meeting on May 17

Business & Finance

The contractors for the upcoming Town of Duck beach nourishment project, Coastal Planning and Engineering and dredging company Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, will present project updates at the Town Council’s mid-month meeting on Wednesday, May 17.

The meeting will be held in the Paul F. Keller Meeting Hall (formerly the Town of Duck Meeting Hall) starting at 1:00 p.m.

The construction dates for the beach nourishment were originally scheduled for April 1 to approximately June 1, 2017, but are now moved to mid to late May and continue through mid to late July.

According to the company, GLDD is planning to use dredge Liberty Island for the Duck project.

The U.S.-flagged trailing suction hopper dredge has capacity of 6,540 yd³. The vessel measures 315 ft. in length, with a breadth of 59 ft and depth of 28 ft.

It is expected that during the project over 1,061,000 yd³ of sand will be taken from offshore sand sources and pumped onto the beach.

This will be the first beach nourishment project for the Town of Duck.
