Dorena-Hickman Ferry Closed Due to Dredging

Business & Finance

The Dorena-Hickman Ferry will be closed today due to dredging in the Hickman Harbor, according to District 1 – Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

“When the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredger is working in the harbor there is not enough room for the ferry to safely navigate to and from the Kentucky landing,” the Cabinet said.

Dorena-Hickman Ferry Captain, Jeremy Newsom, said that the ferry will be shut down on Friday, then evaluate on a day by day basis to determine the ability to operate.

The dredger, which is expected to be in Hickman Harbor for about 14 days, is taking a different approach for this round of dredging that could allow the ferry to more easily maintain operations.

Newsom is hopeful that the ferry will only be closed a couple of days as the dredger works near the mouth of the harbor.

For now, he says that the ferry will halt service on Friday, and re-evaluate on a day by day basis.
