Unalaska Plans to Dredge Entrance Channel

Business & Finance

At its meeting Tuesday night, the Unalaska City Council approved an agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to dredge the entrance channel of Unalaska Bay, KUCB Unalaska Community Broadcasting reports.

The project will begin with a study to determine the feasibility of dredging.

It will take USACE about two years to study the potential effects to Front Beach and the surrounding area, according to City Manager Dave Martinson.

Mayor Shirley Marquardt added that this project should stop the recurring problem of ships scraping against a sandbar or being blocked entirely.

Councilor Frank Kelty said that he is glad the project is moving forward, but he is concerned about the long timeline — and the ships that may get turned away in the meantime.
