The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has required Deltares to carry out a technical review of the study “Beach Erosion Studies and Engineering Mitigation Measures for Visakhapatnam” compiled by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT).

The study mainly focuses on the assessment of the erosion problems in the stretch of coast north of Visakhapatnam harbor, which has a total length of about 6 km.

The main outcome of the review and field visit from the Deltares experts indicates that the main reason behind the erosion problems is related to the disturbance to the original sediment balance, mainly induced by human interventions (i.e. harbor constructions).

Deltares said that the only possible and sustainable intervention to mitigate the problems consists in the restoration of the natural sediment balance.
