The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, awarded recently contract to Tunheim Construction of Moorhead, Minnesota, to make repairs to Mississippi River Locks and Dams 4 and 5.
Lock and Dam 4 is located near Alma, Wisconsin. Lock and Dam 5 is located near Winona, Minnesota.
At each of these locks, the work will include making repairs and adding around 200 feet of riprap to the embankments from the storage yard and spillway.
The existing rock protection at these sites is well past its intended design life and is being reinforced to protect against erosion due to wave action and overtopping from high waters.
The project is expected to begin next spring after the snow melts and be completed by October.
