The Environment Agency has strengthened a 200-meter stretch of embankment on the River Bain near Coningsby as part of its ongoing maintenance program to reduce flood risk.
The work is part of the Environment Agency’s £1.8 million asset repair program which, over the next year, will repair approximately a hundred flood defense assets across both counties.
Kate Halka, Operations Manager with the Environment Agency , said: “ River banks and channels can naturally deteriorate over time, sometimes due to erosion, current, or damage. But we have a regular program of inspection that allows us to regularly check our assets and schedule in the necessary maintenance. ”
“ Strengthening these banks means they’ll continue to function the way they should, retaining water and reducing the risk of flooding, ” added Halka.
Nationally, the Environment Agency is making record levels of investment, spending £2.3 billion over the next six years to reduce flood risk to 300,000 more properties. Every £1 spent on protecting communities from flooding saves £8 spent repairing damage.
