News in Photos: GLDD Working on Tybee Island Project

Business & Finance

Cutter suction dredge Alaska, owned and operated by the Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company of Illinois, is currently pumping sand from off-shore of Tybee Island, Georgia, onto the beach.

Under the $10 million contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, GLDD will remove beach-quality sand from the ocean floor and pump it to the beach where construction workers will place the sand in the most advantageous locations to protect the dunes and property from damage caused by passing storms.

During the project, approximately 1.3 million cubic yards of sand will be added to approximately 3 miles of beach front.

Here are some of the latest photos of the Tybee Island project.
